In 1994, the FDA authorized the use of Human Growth Hormone for adults. For
the first time, adults are now able to have their age-related deficiency in
this critical hormone replaced safely with natural, pharmaceutically
produced Human Growth Hormone. The results of HGH replacement are
astounding. This is as big a discovery in medicine as antibiotics or the
X-ray machine.
Aging can now be delayed and even reversed. Studies have shown that
Biomarkers of Aging (strength, reaction time, skin elasticity, vital
capacity, concentration, memory, bone density, visual accommodation, hearing, tactile
sense, and others) can be reversed 10-20 years. Patients
experience 1% gain in lean muscle mass per month and 2% loss of body fat per
month. Skin wrinkles and age spots disappear. "It's like plastic
surgery from the inside-out". Sexual vitality returns. We anticipate
that with HGH replacement along with other indicated hormone replacement
including nutrition and exercise, that we can now expect to live to the age
of 125 in excellent health.

DHEA can be bought over the counter, or more refined products on
prescription. I prefer the prescription product and their sublingual
application to the oral tablets. I can explain this further when we
discuss it. DHEA is produced by the adrenal glands. It begins to drop when we are
thirty years old and declines linearly until we die. In fact, death ensues
as soon as the DHEA levels hit zero. Some people, therefore, use DHEA levels
as a biomarker for aging. DHEA plays a critical role in lowering our
cholesterol, keeping our hearts healthy, minimizing fat deposition,
preventing the development of diabetes, arthritis, and senility.

Thyroid hormone is essential for life. Proper thyroid levels are needed
for optimal functioning. T3 is the most active hormone available to the cells in our body.
Conventional therapy quite often fails to take this into consideration when
replacement therapy is given. Synthetic T4 is the usual replacement hormone
used, and this can give the hoped for effects. However, in too many
instances it doesn't perform as advertised, and the addition of T3 is
needed. This can be tested for in my clinic. In addition,
measuring the basal body temperature, which is an indicator of whether we are
hypothyroid, can reveal the presence of Wilson's Syndrome, a condition where
one always feels cold (and which can be present with the common thyroid tests still being normal).

At times, replacement of
human growth hormone or testosterone to more youthful levels creates a
greater need for thyroid hormone. In these cases, the addition of thyroid hormone to our regimen
can make a considerable difference.
Iodine is a main ingredient in thyroid hormone, and seafood products are an
excellent source for this. Supplemental selenium can help the body to
naturally convert T4 into T3. Thyroid preparations are best take on an empty
stomach.

Rebuttal to PREMPRO Study
Estrogen is an essential sex hormone that declines abruptly in women during
their menopause. When women do not initiate a prompt estrogen replacement
program at the time of menopause, they undergo accelerated aging manifested
by: osteoporosis, senility, heart disease, loss of muscle mass, loss of skin
elasticity and thickness, atrophy of the female genitalia, and depression.Estrogen replacement therapy significantly delays or prevents this
accelerated aging process seen in women following menopause. In fact, women
who take estrogen replacement have half the degenerative diseases of women
who do not take estrogen replacement and live an average of 3.5 years
longer. What is even more amazing, is that these positive statistics are
with those patients on Premarin (non-human estrogen taken from the urine of
pregnant horses). The use of more natural estrogen replacement in the form
of topical creams, patches or under the tongue drops are a far superior way
to go.
Another Alternative
View of Estrogen & Progesterone I do not agree with all
of the statements made in this two part article, but it is a wealth of
information (most of which I consider to be factual). The author does
seem to have an agenda, and it appears to center around the belief that
female medicine is a male conspiracy. The only conspiracies that I'm
aware of are 1)the corporate greed of the insurance and pharmaceutical
industries, 2) the socialistic government regulators who know better than
you and your doctor what's good for you, and 3) the media who will fill you full of half
truths for advertising revenue. To sort out what
I consider to be the answer to the issues raised in the article we can
discuss any questions you have in my office. (Write down your questions)
What estrogens do I use?
I try to avoid most commercial preparations due to their pitfalls (as described
in the above "alternative view" link). Not only do they
tends to fail in optimizing the potential anti-aging effects of hormone
replacement therapy, but they probably add to certain risk factors
themselves. When I prescribe estrogen I tend to suggest a more
European blend called Bi-est. Bi-est is a blend of estradiol (which
provides most of the menopausal relief and post-menopausal anti-aging) and
estriol (which seems to protect against the small breast cancer potential of
estradiol). Almost all commercial preparations are either straight
estradiol or a blend of 50-some horse estrogens (Premarin or Prempro which
is even worse). Bi-est is usually paid for by insurance companies, and
it is relatively inexpensive.

Progesterone is also a female sex hormone that keeps estrogen in balance and
is therefore absolutely necessary in the female hormone replacement program
regardless of whether the female has a uterus or not. This concept is not
understood by some physicians and this has lead to an increase in cancers of
the uterus and breast in women on estrogen replacement, alone. Progesterone
has powerful anti-cancer properties. In addition, Progesterone facilitates
the action of other hormones such as thyroid, testosterone, and endorphins.
Synthetic progesterones (progestins) such as Provera lack many of the
beneficial properties of Progesterone and in fact actually serve to increase
LDL "the bad form of cholesterol". Provera also does not have the
beneficial effect that Progesterone has in increasing bone mass, reversing
osteoporosis, and burning fat.

Enough?
Both men and women need testosterone for optimal health. Testosterone is
needed for libido, muscle strength, leanness, and sense of well being.
Menopausal women have low to non-detectable testosterone levels with
resultant loss of libido and increase in body fat. Return of libido and
improved mood return within days of testosterone replacement by
transdermal cream or drops under the tongue.. Regrowth of muscle and
bone occurs within months and is facilitated by a weight resistance
training program.
The testosterone level in males peaks at age 17 and declines 1% per year
thereafter. A middle-aged male can therefore have a testosterone level
40% below his peak in young adulthood. This problem can be compounded by
the increased production of sex binding globulins, which make the
lowered testosterone that is present even less effective. Loss of
testosterone in males leads to atherosclerosis and heart attacks,
obesity, fatigue, depression, and anxiety. These symptoms come on long
before the male loses his sex drive or becomes impotent. There is
speculation that testosterone replacement therapy in males causes
prostate cancer or prostate enlargement. There is no proof of
this. In fact, some
Urologist-Oncologists say that testosterone may decrease the incidence
of prostatic hypertrophy and prostate cancer.
