The statements made here are backed by scientific research.  However, it must be remembered that many of the following statements do not have FDA approval, nor do they necessarily have the support of a consensus of physicians.
Sometimes what we buy in the store is not always what we were expecting.  This is especially true for supplements which are not FDA inspected nor tested for quality or potency.  It pays to stick to major reputable brands.  A great resource to check on the quality of the supplements that you are buying is: http://www.consumerlab.com  They independently test samples off of the shelf, not samples submitted by the manufacturer.  Unfortunately, their data base is in the early stage of development, but growing all the time.  There is a caveat, however.  If a brands fails their testing they do not publish its name.  They only publish the names of products that pass their tests.

DHEA can be bought over the counter, or more refined products on prescription.  I prefer the prescription product and their sublingual application to the oral tablets.  I can explain this further when we discuss it.  DHEA is produced by the adrenal glands. It begins to drop when we are thirty years old and declines linearly until we die. In fact, death ensues as soon as the DHEA levels hit zero. Some people, therefore, use DHEA levels as a biomarker for aging. DHEA plays a critical role in lowering our cholesterol, keeping our hearts healthy, minimizing fat deposition, preventing the development of diabetes, arthritis, and senility.

Pregnenolone is produced from cholesterol and is the "mother hormone" of all steroid hormones in the body. Pregnenolone acts as a precursor to our essential steroid hormones such as DHEA, Testosterone, Estrogen, Glucocorticoids, Mineralocorticoids and therefore an ample supply is critical. We have seen deficiencies in the above hormones normalize just by adding Pregenenolone to the treatment regimen.
Pregnenolone also has significant direct effects. It is extremely important for optimal mental performance and is synthesized by the supporting neuronal cells in the brain. Studies have shown that when Pregnenolone is administered, memory is enhanced and mood is improved. Pregnenolone has nerve growth factor ability and has been used in spinal cord injury patients and stroke patients.
